Learning a language isn't just about textbooks and grammar rules. It's also about picking up the casual stuff—the slang that natives use every day. Slang is the secret sauce that will have you sounding like a native speaker in no time! Let’s explore these 10 slang terms that will boost your Slovak vocabulary.
Týpek (noun, masculine), týpka (feminine)
General term for a boy, a man or a girl/woman. It can also be used for a person who is unusual due to their appearance or behaviour.
Example:
Poznáš tohto týpka? (masculine) EN: Do you know this guy?
Fero prišiel s takou novou týpkou. EN: Fero came with a new gal.
Liter (noun)
A thousand monetary units, for example 1000 euros. Plural form in nominative case is litre.
Example:
Koľko stojí ten počítač, čo chceš? Skoro dva litre. EN: How much is that computer that you want? Almost 2K.
V tej zbierke vyzbierali už 20 litrov. EN: They have already raised 20K in that campaign.
Nechápačka (noun, singular), nechápačky (plural)
Nechápať means to not understand. Nechápačky is used when something is really surprising or difficult to comprehend. It is often used as an exclamation.
Example:
Netuším, ako sa mi podarilo spraviť ten test. Totálne nechápačky. EN: I have no idea how I passed that test. I can't wrap my head around it.
Brutál (noun)
It is used to describe something either awesome or terrible.
Example:
Ukáž mi tú novú tašku! Wau, tak tá je brutál! EN: Show me that new bag. Wow, it’s sick!
Počul si o tej nehode? Tak to je brutál! EN: Have you heard about that accident? Man, that’s brutal!
Výška (noun)
Derived from vysoká škola (EN: university, college)
Example:
Chystáš sa na výšku? EN: Are you planning to go to uni?
Fajront (noun)
A term used for the end of working/school time.
Example:
Tak čo, už máš fajront? EN: So, are you done for today?
Vymakaný (adjective)
It is used to describe something perfect, of top quality. It is also used to describe somebody who has a well-trained physique obtained through sports
Example:
Wow! Tvoj byt je riadne vymakaný! Vyzerá ako z katalógu! EN: Wow! Your apartment is awesome! It looks like it's straight out of a catalogue!
Eva je riadne vymakaná, každý deň chodí do fitka. EN: Eva is pretty ripped, she goes to the gym every day.
Zmrzka (noun)
Short for zmrzlina (EN: ice cream).
Example:
Nepôjdeme na zmrzku? EN: Shall we go for ice cream?
Mať na háku (idiomatic expression)
To not care about something. Literal English translation is to have something on the hook.
Example:
Vôbec sa na tú skúšku nepripravil. Má to riadne na háku. EN: He didn't prepare for that exam at all. He doesn’t care at all.
Vychytávka (noun)
Used to describe something that is really useful or smart. It can also be used to describe something trendy,
Example:
Táto klávesová skratka, to je dobrá vychytávka! EN: This keyboard shortcut, that's a good hack!
Široké rifle sú najnovšia módna vychytávka EN: Wide-leg jeans are the latest fashion trend
