Today, May 9, is Europe Day, which commemorates the historic declaration made by Robert Schuman in 1950.
As the French Foreign Minister at the time, Schuman proposed the creation of a European institution that would manage the production of coal and steel, with the aim of fostering economic cooperation and reducing the risk of war between European countries.
This idea was put forward at the Salon de l’Horloge of the French Foreign Ministry and laid the foundations for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the first supranational European organisation.

A year later, on 18 April 1951, representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Paris to formally establish the ECSC. Over time, the organisation evolved into the European Economic Community and then the European Union, which is now composed of 27 member states.
To celebrate the Europe Day, several EU institutions open their doors to the public, while local EU offices organise various activities and events suitable for all ages. These events provide citizens with an opportunity to learn more about the EU, its institutions, and its values.

This special day of celebration coincides with one of Europe's most beloved events, Eurovision, which is being held in Malmö from May 7 to May 11, 2024.
The Valencian duo Nebulosa is the representative of Spain, and will be performing the song "Zorra."
