Travel Solo vs Travel with Friends

Travelling solo or with friends? This is the ultimate travel dilemma and maybe even a question you’ve asked yourself, as an Erasmus student. Both options offer unique experiences, and choosing between them depends on what kind of adventure you’re after.

Myself, I am a solo traveller. Sometimes, there’s nothing better than travelling solo, as you’re the captain of your own ship. If I want to spend an entire afternoon in a café or simply walking in the park, I can! Solo travel offers unparalleled freedom and flexibility. It’s a chance to step out of your comfort zone, meet new people, and truly immerse yourself in your surroundings. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to get to know yourself better and gain confidence.

Of course, solo travel isn’t without its challenges. It can sometimes feel a bit lonely, as there’s no one to share those “Wow, look at that!” moments with. But for many, the independence and self-discovery make it all worth it. Think about your mobility experience - it’s a scary, challenging one, an experience that you probably embarked alone for. But I asume that you have already grown a lot just by getting yourself out of your comfort zone!

On the other side, travelling with friends means strenghtening your relationship with your friends. There’s nothing like thinking back to that trip you took together or sharing special moments such as watching the sunset. Friends can push you to try new things and provide comfort when things don’t go as planned.

Traveling with friends also means you can split costs, making things like accommodations and meals more affordable. Plus, planning and decision-making can be easier when you have others to share ideas with.

However, travelling with more people comes with its own set of challenges. Different interests and travel styles can sometimes clash, and compromising on activities can be tricky. It’s important to communicate openly and ensure everyone is on the same page to keep the trip enjoyable for all.

Can’t decide? Why not mix it up? Try taking a solo trip for a few days before meeting up with friends. This way, you get a taste of both experiences. You’ll have your alone time to explore at your own pace and then share the highlights with your friends later. The truth is, you are never alone when you travel solo. I met some of my best friends in hostels, free walking tours, cafés, or by attending different events in the city I was in and being friendly. Everyone is in the same situation as you, so they will most likely want to hang out!

Ultimately, whether you choose to travel solo or with friends, the key is to embrace the journey and make the most of every moment. After all, the world is a vast and wonderful place, just waiting for you to explore it.

So, what’s your travel style? Ready to set off on a solo adventure or gather your friends for a group trip? Maybe even the friends you made during your mobility? Or are you already planning to take a solo trip around Romania? I would love to know – let me know in the comments below!
