Romanian Summer Essentials

Hello everyone! Since summer is here, I want to help you with an article about what you need for an unforgettable summer in Romania. In the following lines, I will present you the places you can visit, the things you need, and general tips for an unforgettable season!

1. It is VERY hot

Temperatures in Romania have been quite high in recent years, especially in cities like Bucharest or at the seaside in Constanța. Make sure to use sunscreen, maybe even a hat, and wear light clothing: cotton dresses, shorts, and t-shirts.

Also, hydration is essential, especially during summer hikes and days spent on the beach. I suggest you carry a reusable water bottle: it's not only eco-friendly but also a great way to ensure you always have water on hand. Many cities in Romania have public fountains where you can refill your bottle for free. In my opinion, tap water is not the best in Romania, but mountain spring water is excellent.

Speaking of hydration – you must try a refreshing "socată" – a traditional Romanian elderflower drink, perfect for cooling down.

2. Where to go

First of all, whether you are walking on the historic streets of Sibiu or hiking in the Carpathian Mountains, comfortable footwear is essential. Opt for a good pair of sneakers or sandals that can handle both city pavements and mountain trails.

Although the Romanian seaside might seem like the first option for a summer vacation, I suggest you explore the mountains! The temperatures are very pleasant during the summer, especially in cities like Brașov, Poiana Brașov, Transfăgărășan, or Romanian villages. Alternatively, you could explore the Danube Delta, find more information in this article.

When it comes to events, summer is festival season, which you should not miss in cities like Cluj or Constanța!

3. Practice your Romanian language skills

Although many Romanians speak English, learning a few basic Romanian phrases can work wonders in making new friends and enhancing your experience. Simple phrases like “Bună” (Hello) and “Mulțumesc” (Thank you) can break the ice and show locals that you are making an effort. Here are some articles from the OLS Practise your Romanian forum to help you!

4. Practical tips

Romania has a pretty good public transport system, with buses, trams, and trains connecting cities and towns. Get a local travel card for easy and affordable travel. Here is a useful topic when it comes to travelling by train.

Summer is the perfect time to explore, relax, and create memories with the friends you met during your mobility. Take advantage of the freedom to travel through Romania, whether you go on a solo adventure to the Danube Delta or with your new friends to the mountains (here's an article about solo versus group travel).

Remember, the best part of your Erasmus journey is defined by the experiences you gather and the friendships you make. So, get out, enjoy the summer, and make the most of your time in Romania!

We would love to hear about your summer in Romania and any tips you have for fellow students on OLS. Share your experiences in the comments below!

Have a great summer!
