For non-native speakers, watching Slovak media can be a unique and enriching experience. Immersing yourself in Slovak language and culture through media not only offers entertainment but also helps improve your language skills in a real-world context. Movies, series and books are an enjoyable way to have a real connection with Slovak language, while providing you a window into the everyday life, history, and social values of Slovaks.

Why Watch Slovak Media?

  1. Language Immersion: Listening to natural Slovak in context helps you better understand grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. You can learn new expressions and see how the language is used in everyday situations.

  1. Understand the culture: Films and series often reflect the culture, history, and social issues of a country. Watching Slovak media will give you insight into what is important to us Slovaks and help you understand our culture better.

  1. Practical Learning: Some films and books are available with subtitles, which is a great way to follow content in Slovak while receiving support in your native language.

So, what are some of the most popular Slovak movies and series? Even though it might not seem like it for such a small country like Slovakia, there is plenty of content to choose from!

Here are some good examples of movies and series that you can start with:

Movies:

Učiteľka - "Učiteľka" (The Teacher) is a 2016 Slovak drama directed by Jan Hřebejk, set in 1980s Communist Czechoslovakia. The film follows Mrs. Drazděchová, a manipulative teacher who exploits her students' parents for personal favors, using her authority to instill fear and control. As the parents begin to push back, the story explores themes of power, corruption, and moral courage, shedding light on the broader societal issues of the time.

Invalid - "Invalid" is a 2023 Slovak action-comedy directed by Jonáš Karásek. The film follows Laco, a wheelchair-bound war veteran, who embarks on a quest for revenge after a brutal attack leaves him paralyzed and his wife dead. Combining dark humor with intense action, "Invalid" offers a gritty yet entertaining story about resilience, justice, and the fight against corruption in a small Slovak town.

Series:

Susedia - "Susedia" is a beloved Slovak sitcom that follows the comedic adventures of two neighboring families, László and František, who live in the same apartment building. Their contrasting personalities lead to humorous misunderstandings and everyday conflicts. The show, which first aired in 2006, has become a classic, capturing the quirks of Slovak suburban life.

Profesionáli "Profesionáli" is a Slovak sitcom that centers around the humorous antics of a quirky police station team led by the bumbling Captain Maroš Nagy. The series showcases the comedic misadventures and absurd situations that arise as the officers attempt to maintain law and order, often with chaotic and hilarious results. The show is known for its light-hearted take on the everyday challenges of law enforcement in Slovakia.

Tips for Non-Native Speakers:

  • Start with Subtitles: If possible, begin with Slovak media that has subtitles in your native language or in English. This will help you better follow the plot while learning new words.

  • Focus on Genres You Enjoy: Choose media based on what you like. If you enjoy comedies, series like "Horná Dolná" will provide a fun way to learn Slovak.

  • Read Books with a Dictionary Handy: When reading Slovak books, keep a dictionary nearby so you can look up new words and phrases.
