Castelo de São Jorge is one of the most well-known places in Lisbon, situated on the highest hill in the city. During some excavations, it was discovered that various peoples, such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Muslims, occupied this site throughout history.
Inside the castle, there is a museum where you can learn more about the history of Lisbon, as well as the famous Tower of Ulisses. This tower, formerly known as the Torre do Tombo, features a periscope that allows you to see the city in 360 degrees in real time. It’s an incredible experience and not to be missed if you’re visiting Lisbon or just passing through!

The Castelo de Óbidos is in the town of Óbidos. This castle has been a National Monument since 1910. In the 20th century, it lay in ruins due to the earthquake of 1755, but it was restored and became the first “Pousada in a Historical Monument” in Portugal.
Today, it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and hosts many international events and festivals. The Óbidos region is well-known in November and December for its chocolate fair, one of the largest and most impressive in the country. If you love chocolate and fairs, be sure to mark it on your calendar!
Castelo de Sines, Setúbal

The Castelo de Sines is in the city of Sines, in the district of Setúbal. This medieval fortress was built on a cliff and has a fascinating history, with occupations dating back to the Paleolithic era. In addition to being an ancient defensive structure, it offers stunning views of the bay. Recently restored, the castle walls still include elements from a 7th-century temple, along with the Museu de Sines and the Casa de Vasco da Gama.

The Castelo de Monsaraz is situated in the parish of Monsaraz, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, district of Évora. Known as a medieval village, it is a charming tourist spot in Portugal, and I personally love the houses made of lime and schist. The castle provides beautiful views over the Alqueva Dam, the largest artificial lake in Europe. It’s a must-visit for anyone who appreciates incredible landscapes and nature!
Castelo de Guimarães, Guimarães

Castelo de Guimarães is located in the heart of the historic centre of the city and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. It was restored in the early 20th century after being used as a military unit. An interesting fact is that it is the first castle in Portugal to have photographic records.
This is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city of Guimarães, so if you’re exploring the north of Portugal, you’ll know what to visit for a medieval experience.
