Today's topic is about Vowels. The Bulgarian language has 30 letters, arranged in an alphabet, and 45 sounds (phonemes):
There are 6 vowels:
- А,Ъ, О, У, Е, И
These vowels can appear in stressed or unstressed positions.
- А (А-а) – Pronounced like "a" in father.
Example: ма́ма (máma) – mom
(Stress falls on the first syllable: ма́-ма)
- Ъ (Ъ-ъ) – A unique sound, similar to the "u" in but (schwa).
Example: сън (sŭn) – dream
(Stress falls on the single syllable.)
- О (О-о) – Pronounced like "o" in more.
Example: мо́ре (móre) – sea
(Stress falls on the first syllable: мо́-ре)
- У (У-у) – Pronounced like "oo" in food.
Example: куро́рт (kurórt) – resort
(Stress falls on the second syllable: ку-ро́рт)
- Е (Е-е) – Pronounced like "e" in met.
Example: пет (pet) – five
(Stress falls on the single syllable.)
- И (И-и) – Pronounced like "ee" in see.
Example: мир (mir) – peace
