Portuguese Grammar: Formal and Informal Speech 

Hello everyone, 

Some people love learning grammar when studying a new language, while for others, it can be more challenging.

But is it really difficult to understand formal and informal speech, or are we overcomplicating things? This blog post will help you identify the contexts of formal and informal speech and show you that it’s much easier than it seems! 

It’s normal when learning a new language for informal speech to be more commonly used, especially since it’s the language we use in our day-to-day interactions with friends and family. However, in a business or academic context, formal speech is always the better choice! 

Examples: 

Formal: Gostaria de esclarecer uma dúvida sobre a matéria. 
Informal: Tenho uma dúvida sobre a matéria. 

Formal: Peço desculpa pelo atraso na entrega do trabalho. 
Informal: Desculpa, atrasei-me a enviar o trabalho. 

Formal: Venho por este meio solicitar informações sobre a vaga. 
Informal: Queria saber mais sobre o trabalho. 

Formal: Informo que estarei ausente na próxima semana. 
Informal: Não vou estar cá na próxima semana. 

Formal: Foi um prazer conhecê-lo. 
Informal: Gostei de te conhecer! 

Formal: Poderia indicar-me onde fica a estação de metro? 
Informal: Onde é o metro? 

Formal: Desculpe, poderia ajudar-me? 
Informal: Desculpa, podes ajudar-me? 

Differences in grammar: 

Switching between "você" vs. "tu" 

  • Formal: Poderia enviar-me os documentos? 

  • Informal: Podes mandar-me os documentos? 

Using more formal verb tenses 

  • Formal: Solicito que me envie o relatório até amanhã. 

  • Informal: Podes enviar-me o relatório amanhã? 

Tips for Switching Between Formal and Informal 

  • Understand the Context: Are you speaking to a professor or a friend? 

  • Adapt to Your Audience: Use informal language with people you are close to, and formal language with those in authority or whom you don’t know very well. 

  • Practice: Listen to how Portuguese speakers communicate in different situations.
