Dan l-artiklu huwa magħmul għal nies li għadhom kemm bdew il-ġrajja tagħhom tat-tagħlim tal-Malti

Il-Malti huwa lingwa mħallat ma’ għadd ta’ lingwi oħrajn, u fil-bażi tal-grammatika tiegħu, insibu l-Għarbi. Meta nitkellmu bil-Malti, ħafna drabi ngħidu: "il-bniedem", "ix-xemx", "in-nannu"... imma għalfejn xi kultant ngħidu il- u xi kultant ix-, in- jew is-?

Ejja naraw flimkien!

X'inhuma l-konsonanti Qamrin?

Il-konsonanti qamrin huma dawk li magħhom nużaw l-artiklu definit  “il-'".

Eżempju:

  • il-bniedem
  • il-qattus
  • il-ġurdien

L-artiklu definit ‘il-' nużawh ma’ kliem li jibdew b’dawn l-ittri:

b, d, f, ġ, g, h, ħ, k, m, q, v, z

U x'inhuma l-konsonanti Qamrin?

Il-konsonanti xemxin huma dawk li magħhom nużaw artiklu li jinkludi l-ewwel konsonanta tal-kelma li magħha jkun qed jingħaqad l-artiklu.

Eżempju:

  • ix-xemx
  • in-nannu
  • is-sajjied

Lista ta’ Konsonanti Xemxin:

j, l, n, r, s, t, x, ż

Eżerċizzju żgħir

Agħżel il-forma korretta:

  • (il / in-) nanna
  • (il / is-) serp
  • (il / ix-) xadina
  • (il / il-) kelb
  • (il / iż-) żrinġ

Apparti l-konsonanti qamrin u dawk xemxin, ukoll insibu l-eċċezzjonijiet. Dawn jinkludu l-użu tal-artiklu definit ‘l-’ flimkien ma’ kliem li jibdew b’fonema (ħoss) ta’ vokali bħal:

  • l-ajruport
  • l-għana
  • l-argument
  • l-internet
  • l-univers

X'taħseb? Taħseb li sirt taf kif tuża dawn il-konsonanti? Ikkummenta żewġ kelmiet – waħda b’konsonanti xemxija u waħda b’konsonanti qamrija flimkien mal-artiklu tagħhom – li ma ssemmewx fil-kummenti hawn taħt.

Moon Consonants and Sun Consonants
This article is made for people who have just begun their journey of learning Maltese.

Maltese is a language that blends with many others, and at the base of its grammar, we find Arabic. When we speak Maltese, we often say: "il-bniedem", "ix-xemx", "in-nannu"… but why do we sometimes say il- and other times ix-, in- or is-?

Let’s find out together!

What are Moon Consonants?
Moon consonants are those with which we can hear the letter “L” in the article “il-”.

Example:
il-bniedem
il-qattus
il-ġurdien

We use the definite article ‘il-’ (moon form) with words that begin with these letters:
b, d, f, ġ, g, h, ħ, k, m, q, v, z

And what are Sun Consonants?
Sun consonants are those where the article includes the first consonant of the word it is joining.

Example:
ix-xemx
in-nannu
is-sajjied

You only hear the consonant that follows: x, n, s... not the “l”!

List of Sun Consonants: j, l, n, r, s, t, x, ż

A Short Exercise
Choose the correct form:
(il / in-) nanna
(il / is-) serp
(il / ix-) xadina
(il / il-) kelb
(il / iż-) żrinġ

Apart from moon and sun consonants, we also find exceptions. These include the use of the definite article ‘l-’ together with words that begin with a vowel sound, such as:

l-ajruport
l-għana
l-argument
l-internet
l-univers

What do you think? Do you think that you’ve gotten a hang of how to use these consonants? Comment two words, one which has a sun consonant and a moon consonant with their articles, which haven’t been mentioned in the comments below!
