Hiking Culture in Slovakia

If you’ve spent a few weekends here, you’ve probably noticed how much Slovaks love nature—especially the mountains. Whether it’s a short walk in the forest or a full-day hike in the Tatras, hiking is a big part of local life. Well-marked trails, wooden shelters, and mountain huts (chaty) make it easy to get out and explore.

You’ll often see families, seniors, or even kids in hiking boots on a Sunday morning, heading to a viewpoint or a lakeside trail. It’s not just for fitness—many people say it’s their way to relax and disconnect. Some even go hiking in winter, with poles and warm tea in their backpacks!

Have you joined a hike with Slovak friends or other Erasmus participants? How does this outdoor culture compare to what you're used to back home?
