New Estonian Films and Series You Should Watch
The Estonian film industry has got new wind in its sails and all the new Estonian films and series are making waves! In this blog post, we'll introduce you to a couple of new Estonian series and films that will help you learn Estonian and ensure you have a great time.
Von Fock
Estonian audiences love crime and thriller series full of mystery and intrigue. If you like such series, you might like the new domestic series Von Fock. Based on the novel "The Mystery of the Soldier of the Cross" by Ain Kütt, the series premiered on 14 March 2025. What also makes it special is that it is a period drama. The protagonist, Paul von Fock, is a 19th-century detective investigating a murder at Sagadi Manor.
JULK aka Jan Uuspõld Goes Home
"Jan Uuspõld Goes Home” is the sequel to Jan Uuspõld Goes to Tartu. Eighteen years after the first film, which showed Jan Uuspõld's journey through Estonia, it is now time for him to go home. The film premiered on 28 February 2025. The two films show Estonian life with its beauty and pain, but are comedy films above all.
Leelo: One Day We'll Laugh Anyway
The documentary Leelo: Once We Laugh Anyway premiered on 12 March 2025. The film tells the life story of poet and writer Leelo Tungal. It would be hard to find anyone in Estonia who didn't read Leelo Tungal's works as a child, or who never read her poems at school. For example, her book Kristiina, the Middle One is mandatory reading in many schools.
The Black Hole
The Black Hole is - as you might guess from the name - a space-related feature film. Inspired by the short stories of writers Andrus Kivirähk and Armin Kõomägi, the absurd comedy premiered on 31 January 2025. The protagonists live in a suburb and their lives are turned upside down when strange characters appear on their doorstep. As the Estonian Film Database says: "When aliens, a giant spider, an Austrian in knee-breeches and a voluptuous femme fatale appear, dreams disappear like stars into a black hole."
Which of these films and series have you already watched? Did you go to any of the premieres or see them in cinemas in your home town? Which ones do you like the most, or which ones would you like to see first? Do you have any films you would recommend to others? Let us know in a blog post or in the forums!
