Learning Slovak often leads to surprising or funny moments—especially when a word sounds familiar but means something completely different from what you expect. These “false friends” can confuse you at first, but they’re also a great way to learn!

For example:

  • Trapný may sound like trapped, but it really means embarrassing.

Here are a few more examples to look out for:

  • Chef – in Slovak, šéf means boss, not a cook

  • Aktuálny – means current, not actual in the sense of “real”

  • Gymnázium – a type of secondary school, not a gym for working out
