Hi Diego!

Tell us more about what you mean. :)

Why is English important to you and how do you use it in your daily life?

Where are you from and what country are you in now?

How long have you been learning English and are you using it during your mobility program? If so, tell us how.

Also, I saw there were two forum posts from you with the same information. Perhaps it was an error. Don’t worry, I’ve deleted the other one so that everyone who wants to join your conversation can do so in one place.

Looking forward to what you will share with us,

Iya

I hold that the English language is nowadays a necessity for various reasons. Above all, I daresay it is almost indispensable to escape provincial or national places: it opens new possibilities all around the world as it is one of the most spoken languages on earth. In this way, people get to know so different cultures, ideas, locations that would be generally unavailable without English. It is practical, thus, as it is the modern lingua franca. What i more, in reference to economics, English enables new opportunities with one's career as it is the main language in financial, political, diplomatic and economical matters and it is the language of the most powerful and influential countries. Learning new languages, furthemore, is always healthy for one's mind and it is a good cognitive practice. Finally, the English language has a myriad of masterpieces regarding literature, philosophy, history, science... and foreign works are usually translated.
In conclusion, English, being the modern lingua franca, adjusts to new ideas, mindset, cultures; is the key languange to have access to a large extent of knowledge and professional opportunities. Reckoning without it would be, to my mind, a big life mistake.
Personally, I adore the English language for its history and roots, so that I am glad to get to practise everyday to improve my skills. Learning it, therefore, is generally a leisure!

I am so happy you've joined our community, Enigma, and that you've taken the time to share your thoughts with us.

You're absolutely correct, English IS the modern lingua franca and its use can be found in nearly every corner of the world.

A few months ago during a visit to Italy, I participated in an Erasmus event in which the attendees were from different parts of Europe. The language used to communicate with each other was English - whether they were doing a presentation of their professional projects or simply sharing their musical interests. For me, as an American, it was quite fascinating (and to be quite honest, heartwarming!) to see all of these lovely people seeking to understand each other and share knowledge with each other using a language that was not their mother tongue.

I'm so happy to read how well the English language has served you and how much it's been a pleasure for you.

What have you learned about the roots of the English language? I'm ever so curious!

English allows of special communities, I do agree.
As for English roots, to be frank, I ain't an expert, so that my accountability isn't 100%.
What I can say for sure, however, is that the English language is the "daughter" of centuries of changes and influences. For instance, notwithstanding its Germanic origin (mainly Anglo-Saxon), it would be imprecise to reckon it simply as a Germanic language. Its core vocabulary, grammar and syntax are Germanic; nevertheless, it in fact has more latin-related words than Germanic ones, especially in modern English. Some of these words have been directly taken from latin, some have been inherited by ancient Roman dominion, the majority of them is from Norman dominion and the heavy influence of French (the sole British pronunciation is due to the attempt at the emulation of the sophisticated French one. It is also the reason why I struggle a little with phonetic). Not to mention Spanish and Italian influence, as well. As a consequence of such an intertwined destiny (I am intending English and Latin), there are synonyms from both roots (e.g. "fight" and "combat"). English has had other influences in its history, such as Greek, Celtic, Arabic etc.

Somehow, reading your account makes it feel like I’ve just had a brief tour of a small part of human history. So, thanks for that!

Very interesting what you mention about the French influence on British English.

It brings to mind a particular fascination of mine with regard to the Irish accent and Jamaican accents. They sound incredibly similar to me. Thanks to this discovery, I’ve begun to learn more about how Irish and Jamaican histories are intertwined and I’ve adored this linguistic journey!
