Autumn in Denmark – Falling Leaves & Danish Hygge

Hej Allesammen,

Autumn has officially arrived in Denmark! The days are getting shorter, the air is cooler, and the trees are full of red and orange leaves. For many Danes, fall is the season of hygge: lighting candles, drinking hot chocolate, and enjoying cozy evenings indoors.

There are also special cultural moments this coming season. In October, many schools and families enjoy efterårsferie (the autumn holiday), and Halloween has become more and more popular in recent years. Autumn also means seasonal foods: apple desserts, pumpkin soup, and warm stews are common on the table.

For newcomers, this season can feel both magical and challenging — with earlier darkness and rainy days, but also many opportunities to experience Danish culture.

Vocabulary – Ordbog

  • efterår – autumn
  • efterårsferie – autumn holiday
  • blade – leaves
  • stearinlys – candles
  • æblekage – apple cake/dessert
  • græskar – pumpkin
  • regnvejrsdag – rainy day
  • hygge – coziness

Discussion Prompt

  • How do you experience efterår in Denmark (or where you are now)?
  • Have you tried any Danish autumn foods or traditions like æblekage or efterårsferie?
  • What is your favorite way to make a regnvejrsdag more hyggelig?
I look forward to seeing your responses in the comment section below this discussion!
