Hi (Ahoj),

Let's start with a question? What is your motivation to learn Czech? Select one or more and write it as a reply to this post:

  1. I am going to be on a mobility programme (Erasmus+, Solidarity, VET) in the Czech Republic.
  2. I am already in the Czech Republic participating in one of these programmes.
  3. I have just moved in the Czech Republic for different reasons.
  4. I have a remote friend who speaks Czech.
  5. I want to learn more about the culture in the Czech Republic.
  6. I study abroad (not in the Czech Republic) and the Czech language is a part  of my study plan, and
  7. any other reason.

This is the right place to ask any questions about the Czech language, share your learning experience with people of similar interests or find a friend who wants to practise Czech.

I am Martin, I live in the Czech Republic and I am here to help.

Let's start talking in Czech.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Anna, (Ahoj Anno),

Thank you for being brave and letting us know your motivation for learning Czech. So you are a little familiar with this platform and one of the first to answer our call. We have another question for you:
Have you tried the Czech Placement test yet? If Yes, then how did you find it - easy, difficult, ....

I am sure your experience of living here would be appreciated also by our new forum "Living abroad" which has just started. You could post an inquiry there if you wish to find someone who stays here as well. Follow this link to the forum and let's see if you can find someone similarly brave to share his/her stories from staying here.

Happy searching for new mates and keep us posted please.

Wishing you all the best,

Martin

Ahoj Joanna,

You are at the right place. As this community has started to develop, you are the one which can help us to set a tone to it. Please pick a cultural topic which you are most interested in related to living in the Czech Republic. We will start the discussion then on our Living abroad forum (click the link to get there).

Please also check our learning resources, for example: Learn Czech with OLS or help us with the first topic of saying hello and goodbye in Czech here.

Should you have any questions about the language, living here or just how the OLS platform works, do not hesitate to contact me.

We are very glad to have you here and hearing from you again.

Happy stay in the Czech Republic,

Martin (Czech Community Manager)

Fórum se jmenuje "Ask the Community" a najdeš ho zde.

Máš nápad, jaké téma by bylo v češtině zajímavé i pro další přicházející nebo stávající členy komunity?

Moc rád od tebe znovu uslyším.

Přeji hodně zdaru v učení jazyků.

Ahoj Martin from the German community!

For me it is 5! I visit the Czech Republic a lot, and I always want to learn the local language wherever I go. I must say I find Czech a bit hard (like Polish), especially reading the many consonants and pronouncing them correctly. :)

Ahoj Carmelito,

It is great that you have interest in foreign cultures including the Czech one. Yes, Czech is difficult to learn, but on the other hand, it is one of the phonetic languages, so "what you see is what you get" rule applies. There are few silent letters if any and little weakening of the consonants in pronunciation in comparison to English for example. One of the hardest Czech consonants to pronounce is "ř" which is even listed in the Guinness book of records. I would be happy to help to answer any other questions you might have about the grammar or vocabulary. Thanks for your input and comment. Martin
