Hello everybody! Cześć wszystkim!

This is a thread for everyone doing their mobility program in Łódź, and for those from other cities planning to visit Łódź! Here you can ask your questions regarding accommodation, various practicalities, places to see, local events, things to do, organise meetups, etc.

Feel free to ask anything you need to know and both me and the community will do our best to help you.

Hello everybody!
Maybe this is a dumb question but... Are there public libraries in Łódź which lend books (maybe also books for children...) to foreign people/students? I love reading and could (try to) learn Polish from books

Cześć!
This is a great question!
Each district has a public library and many neighbourhoods have their libraries too. Anyone can register for free, it's enough to bring your ID card or passport (possibly a student ID but it shouldn't be required). You can check where's the nearest public library HERE. The rules may vary between the libraries, so it's best to inquire directly upon registration but you can usually borrow two up to four books at a time for one month, this can be, of course, extended. All public libraries have children's sections (myself, I love children's books and, in my opinion, it's a wonderful way to learn a foreign language).
If you're interested in books in foreign, your best bet might be Biblioteka Wojewódzka or the university library - Biblioteka Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, you may also want to check the American Corner of the University of Lodz for books in English.

I hope this helps but let me know if you have any questions :) I hope you'll find a good library soon, let me know!

Thank you David! In few weeks I will be in Lodz and I will try to find a nearby library (and, hopefully, an English speaking librarian XP)

No problem :)
I'm excited for you! Lodz is a great city! Make sure to let me know how you like it!
As for English-speaking librarians - in Biblioteka Wojewódzka and the university library you shouldn't have any problems. Nowadays in district libraries, there are more and more young librarians, so you are definitely going to find someone who speaks at least basic English. Even if not, I'm sure you will manage with, or without any Polish, librarians are always very happy to help those, who love books like themselves. Fingers crossed! Powodzenia :)
