In my country, we are more warm and welcoming. My culture shock is seeing that in other countries people are used to being cold, even with their own family. It doesn't mean that people are bad, we just have different customs, and that can make it a little more complicated to maintain a good, true, and comfortable friendship.

Hi, my name is Jessica. Usually when I travel I go by bus, then I open a map and walk around, getting to know the route. I can usually walk 5km easily. I think it's become a routine.

When I visit a new country, I generally prefer walking or using public transport like trains. Walking is my favorite way to move because it allows me to discover hidden spots, see the local architecture closely, and really feel the atmosphere of the city.

I prefer walking and meeting that new place. It makes me happy and that way I get used to the routes easily. I can locate myself in those places, but I still didn't get used to trains and underground trains in other countries. I see place for improvement, a place to try it on a next trip.

When I go to a new country, I prefer to walk. I like walking because it helps me see the city better. I can discover small streets, local cafés, and interesting places that I might miss if I take a bus or train. Walking also helps me feel more connected to the culture and the people.

I’d usually prefer walking first, then public transport, and biking or scooters in the right situations.

Walking is hard to beat when you first arrive somewhere. It helps you notice small details—street markets, architecture, local cafés—that you’d miss from a vehicle. It’s also the easiest way to understand the layout of a neighborhood and get a real feel for daily life. The downside is obvious: it’s slow and tiring if distances are long.

For longer trips across a city, buses and trains are usually the most practical.

When I travel, I prefer to walk and take the train. I prefer taking the train because it is faster than other means of transport. If there is traffic, a scooter is very convenient, as well as a bicycle. Personally, I have never rented a scooter or a bike when traveling, and I have never had any kind of problem.

When I visit a new country, I love to just walk everywhere because it’s the best way to actually see the hidden details of the streets. It makes me feel much more connected to the vibe of the city than if I were stuck sitting on a crowded bus or a fast train. Plus, I don't have to worry about schedules or tickets, I just go wherever my feet take me.

Why I like it: It is much faster than walking, but it still allows me to see the city closely. You can explore narrow streets where buses cannot go.
My story: Last year, I rented an electric scooter in Lisbon using a phone app. It was incredibly fun and saved me from walking up the steep hills. I really enjoyed the freedom and the wind in my face.
Problems and solutions: The main problem was finding a proper parking spot, as the app restricts where you can leave them. I solved this by checking the digital map carefully before stopping.

I love to walk when exploring a new country! Walking is the perfect way to truly absorb the local culture, stumble upon hidden cafes, and notice the little details you'd miss in a car or bus. It allows you to set your own pace and connect deeply with the environment. When I rented a scooter in a bustling coastal town, I loved the freedom and speed it gave me to reach remote beaches and scenic viewpoints. However, dealing with chaotic, unfamiliar traffic and finding a safe place to park were definitely stressful challenges. I managed by sticking to well-lit main routes, wearing highly visible gear, and researching local parking rules ahead of time.

"Walking is the perfect way to truly absorb the local culture, stumble upon hidden cafes, and notice the little details you'd miss in a car or bus".
I couldn't agree more.
It's precisely what I think.
It allows you to soak in the local environment.

Hello again Chiara,
Yes, and also if you go cycling you can explore faster than walking.
Tell us: which country in particular did you enjoy exploring in that way?
I remember renting a bicycle in Scotland, on the Highlands, near Inverness, and it's a memory I will never forget.

Good evening again, Chiara.
Well done on participating so actively in the forum.
I agree with you.
I personally hate loud vehicles.
There are certain types of motorbikes which are extremely antisocial, louder than a pneumatic drill, which is very annoying.
As you say, cycling is slow and silent. And, yes, it respects the environment.

Good morning Alejandro,
France's train have some great reputation.
I think it was the first country to introduce high-speed trains on a mass scale. Excellent alternative to Co2-producing vehicles!
To be honest, Spain too has a great train network.

Hi, I’m Jenny from Colombia. I love exploring new places, and I enjoy doing so on foot with a friend acting as a guide. I prefer walking because I avoid traffic and can take plenty of photos and enjoy local dishes. I haven't traveled abroad, but I have visited other cities on the coast; the local sayings and the food were unique—truly great.

Walking allows you to breathe in and "feel" directly the place that you're visiting.
