Hey guys,

I hope you're all doing well now that the fall season has finally started and the weather is colder. As your Romanian Community Manager, I feel that it's within my power to guide you towards the best ways to travel around Romania. Since sustainability is what we are all looking for, let me guide you through the Romanian train system!

First of all, Romania's train system is operated by the state-owned company CFR Călători (Căile Ferate Române). The network connects major cities, towns, and even remote villages, making it a good way to travel across the country.

BOOKING TICKETS - one of the easiest ways to book train tickets in Romania is through the official CFR Călători website, which is available in English and allows you to search for train schedules, book tickets, and even choose your seats in advance. It's advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons. If you travel far away, I advise you to book a sleeper compartment.

If you prefer to book tickets in person, you can also book at the counters at major train stations.

SCENIC ROUTES - One of the best train rides you can do in Romania is by far The Mocănița Steam Train, a scenic steam train in the North of Romania (the Maramureș region).

The Bucovina Express also takes you through the stunning landscapes of northern Romania, particularly in the Bucovina region. This route is renowned for its painted monasteries, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

SOME FINAL TIPS

  • arrive early, as trains usually depart on time
  • if a train gets cancelled because of weather conditions, try to seek help from the workers. Alternatively, look online for bus options.

Finally, sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the beauty of Romania's landscapes!

Happy travels and see you on the forums,

Roxana, OLS Community Manager - Romanian
