This discussion topic is part of the 5-minute language learning sessions with which I aim to give you a short, but useful information about the Bulgarian language. In this publication I have added translation into Bulgarian, as it is useful for you to see how the words are written when trying to recognise the genders of the nouns in this language.

In the Bulgarian language every noun belongs to one of three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, or neuter. 

(В българския език всяко съществително принадлежи към три граматически рода: мъжки, женски или среден.)

The nouns name various objects (sofa, notebook, lamp), persons (teacher, Christina, man), substances (clay, steel), animals (dog, giraffe, elephant), experiences (happiness, sadness, idea), etc. A noun is any word that we can associate with the numerals ’onе’ - in Bulgarian the word ’onе’ changes for every 3 grammatical genders (one season, one feeling, one textbooks).

(В българския език съществителните имена назовават различни предмети (диван, тетрадка, лампа), лица (учител, Христина, мъж), вещества (глина, стомана), животни (куче, жираф, слон), преживявания (щастие, тъга, представа) и др. Съществително име е всяка дума, която можем да свържем с числителните имена един, една, едно, едни  (един сезон, едно чувство, едни учебници).

 
Grammatical signs (Граматически признаци)

1. There is a permanent gender, which we determine with the numerals ‘one’:

Masculine gender (abbreviation - m. r.) – one train; one chair; one potato; one holiday;

Feminine gender (abbreviation - zh. r.) – one room; one apple; one necessity;

Neuter gender (abbreviation sr. r.) – one adventure; one girl; one flower;

1. Има постоянен род, който определяме чрез числителните имена един, една, едно:

Мъжки род (съкращение - м. р.) – един влак; един стол; един картоф; един празник; 

Женски род (съкращение - ж. р.) – една стая; една ябълка; една необходимост;

Среден род (съкращение ср. р.) – едно приключение; едно момиче; едно цвете; 

2. It changes by number. (Изменя се по число.)
   
   

• Masculine: season – seasons; case – cases; father – fathers; judge – judges; grandfather – grandfathers; tea – teas;

Мъжки род:  сезон – сезони; случай – случаи; баща – бащи; съдия – съдии; дядо – дядовци; чай – чайове;

• Feminine: street – streets; book – books; woman – women; snake – snakes; bone – bones; virtue – virtues (when a noun from the genitive case ends in a consonant, the ending is added to the base form)

Женски род:  улица – улици; книга – книги; жена – жени; змия – змии; кост – кости; добродетел – добродетели (когато същ. име от ж.р. завършва на съгласна, окончанието се прибавя към основната форма)

• Neuter: wheel – wheels; teaching – teachings; fusion – fusions; sea – seas

Среден род: колело – колела; учение – учения; сливане – сливания; море – морета

! Some nouns do not have plural forms (courage, goodness, eternity), and others do not have singular forms (glasses, pants).

Някои същ. имена нямат форми за мн.ч. (храброст, благост, вечност), а други нямат за ед.ч. (очила, гащи).     

3. The noun is participle. (Съществителното име се членува.) 

• Masculine: season – season – the season; plural: seasons – the seasons
• Feminine: joy – joy; plural: joys – joys
• Neuter: girl – the girl; plural: girls – the girls

• Мъжки род: сезон – сезона – сезонът; мн. ч.: сезони – сезоните
• Женски род: радост – радостта; мн. ч.: радости – рaдостите
• Среден род: момиче – момичето; мн. ч.: момичета – момичетата
