How to Stretch a Dollar Series: Food on a Budget

Hi friends,

Welcome to our new How to Stretch a Dollar* series! Here you will learn all about being financially astute while in your mobility program abroad. Who knows, maybe these tips will be life-changing for some of you! So, let’s dive right in.

For many of you, you’re now a few weeks into your mobility program.

You’ve managed to find a place to live. ✅

You’ve made new friends. ✅

But one area you may find yourself struggling a bit is: having enough food to eat!

We know that something as essential as food isn’t always easy to attain particularly on a limited budget, so read below for tips and ideas that will help you enjoy eating well while living abroad.

PLAN YOUR MEALS

hand in process f writng in a weekly calendar

Spend time planning what you’re going to cook for the week.

By doing so, you’ll have a clear idea of what you will eat during the week. You’ll avoid spending too much money and buying items you don’t actually need. Knowing your meal plan, you are less likely to waste food. The added bonus is you’ll save time by not having to think every day about what you will make. :D

CHECK THE PRICE BEFORE YOU BUY!

coins in hand

Compare prices before you drop that can of tomato sauce in your shopping trolley! Often, there are several selections of the same item but sold by different brands. Choosing the less expensive option often means you are still getting the same flavor and quality, but just at a lower price.

BE DISCOUNT SAVVY!

various percentages floating above a woman

Keep an eye out for discounts and store deals. More and more stores are becoming ecologically conscious and are striving to find ways not to waste food. Look for the discounted items that are often close to their sell-by date. If you get items like these, be sure to eat them soon or freeze them until you’re ready.

DON’T SHOP HUNGRY

bins of candy

Gaaaah! Many of us have been there before. You’re starving and you’re in the shop and EVERYthing looks so good, so you buy items you don’t need or you buy more than you actually need. By shopping while hungry, you may start snacking on items that aren’t good for your health. I’ve been there many, many times! Those crisps may take the edge off your hunger, but in the long run, you will have filled up on “food” that actually has no nutritional value.

If you’re hungry and need to go shopping; simply take the time to sit, have a healthy snack, and use that time to think about what you ought to purchase.

BUY SEASONAL – AND LOCAL

display of fresh foods in various sized bowls.

Out-of-season fruits and vegetables often travel thousands of air miles to get to the store shelves which ends up driving up both the price of your food and has a negative environmental impact. So instead of eating mangoes in winter, opt for something grown in your region.

COOK IN BATCHES

the same prepared meals in containers.

Batch cooking is simply choosing one day every week to make large quantities of food so that you can eat the already prepared foods throughout the week. As pictured above, you then separate the food into smaller serving sizes so that you have ready-made meals all set to grab and go. You can store the meals in your fridge or freezer and take out the amount you need when you’re ready to eat.

COOK WITH FRIENDS

two happy girls preparing to have a meal

Why should eating be a solo affair? It doesn’t have to be!

If you’re sharing a flat, why not also share meals together sometimes? By doing so, you not only share the cost of ingredients, but you also share in food prep and cooking. One of the bonuses of living abroad in shared housing is you can discover cuisines from different cultures. What are some of the other benefits of sharing meals?

ALRIGHT, OVER TO YOU, FRIENDS!

Go to the Living Abroad forum to share your tips with us. Here are some questions to help you get started:

How do you eat well on a budget? Which of the tips from the blog do you already do or would like to try?

Show us how you plan your meals.

What are your favorite seasonal local foods?

Do you do ‘batch cooking’? What are some examples of batched meals you’ve made?

What do you like about sharing meals with your friends? What are some meals you discovered thanks to sharing with friends and flatmates?

*Stretch a Dollar is an American idiom that means that one is frugal or thrifty with money. One ‘stretches’ a dollar by making it go further to cover more goods.

Howdy, friends!

Welcome back to our money-saving series, How to Stretch a Dollar. If you recall, the first in our series was all about eating well while on a budget. Money management and good food go hand in hand, but now let’s get into some tips and tricks for how to have a fantastic social life while keeping an eye on your wallet.

ai-generated friends on couchA FILM FROM HOME

An old-school method for sure, but it's all about the journey, not the destination! Hit your local library with some friends. Your task: Choose a film from your home country that best represents it. Watch it together and enjoy the great discussions and interesting exchanges that will emerge.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

A culinary version of the above and mentioned in episode one of our money-saving series: share a meal! It bears repeating that not only can you share on expenses, but it’s an excellent way to socialize. Start by going shopping together. Then, one of you prepares a starter, the other a main, and the next, dessert. Add or take away a course depending on your numbers. Cooking the food together is always fun -- if a little messy. Nostalgia trips via your tastebuds, guaranteed!

All skills welcome! Belt out your favorite tunes, try out that violin piece you’ve been practicing, and harmonize with the best of them by having open mics, talent shows, and karaoke get-togethers in the comforts of home. Rotate who hosts the events and don’t think this has to be a night thing either. If you remember from my “Make Your Own Fun” blog, I love daytime parties! So have a few, make some brunch, and share your talents with each other.

Sports might not always be your cup of tea; but hockey, basketball, football matches (pick any sport) can often be affordably priced. Find a stadium and soak up the local flavor. Who knows, perhaps you'll even become a devoted fan which gives you yet another way of practicing your language skills.

MONUMENTS & STATUES

Don't forget the obvious: Monuments and tourist sites are, more often than not, worth your time, and totally free to visit (most of the time.) Ever wondered who some of these bronze or stone figures are in your city? Why not grab a map and go on a treasure hunt to find out who they are and how they may have shaped your host country’s history?

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

For the price of a bus ticket or by simply putting air in your bike tires, you can say hello to Mother Nature and grab a quiet moment in the hills, mountains, or riverside. Get out of your daily trails and find a few tranquil spots to enjoy with a friend or two. Hug a tree or let one hug you, I promise you’ll feel better. :)

Get those knees pumping! Free walking tours are often available in bigger or more touristic cities and towns. Don’t be shy about joining one or two. What better way to become a local expert than by literally following in the footsteps of one? Don't forget to tip your guide though, even if it's just for the price of a coffee!

Entrance to museums and galleries are often free, or have reduced rates for students. For paid museums, often there will be a day of the month when entrance is free. For example, every first Sunday, museums in France are free. Transport yourself by delving deep into the traditions and arts of your host country and beyond. Let your imaginations soar while staring at ancient relics from the Bronze Age, perhaps.

Oh, game nights are so fun! Remember all those times in the living room or around a table when you and your family played board games or card games for hours on end? Those don’t have to be distant memories anymore!  Grab a few new friends and ask them to bring their favorite game to your house. What better way to spend an evening than to discover new games or a shared love of a beloved one? Psst! …Scrabble lends well to learning English, so grab a board and get those wooden tiles on their pews!

How to Stretch a Dollar Series: Travelling on a Budget

Having a good time during your mobility program doesn't have to mean spending lots of money. With the success of our Stretch a Dollar series, we take our thrifty tips to the next level: travelling on a budget!

You’re deeply committed to your mobility program, we know… but there’s this growing desire in you to discover more about your host country. You think, “Hey! Wouldn’t it be just dandy to explore nearby cities or even neighboring countries?”

It is a great way to gain new experiences and maybe even friends who can become fellow, life-long travelling pals. You'd get to know new regions, cultures, vibes, or even the local cuisine.

But how then you wonder, “How can I do all of this traveling and exploring on a budget?” Check out more nifty thrifting tips to get some ideas that you can try!

man with magnifying glass RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH!!

Don’t be too hasty to buy the first ticket you see. Before each journey, check out multiple travel routes. Most of the transport websites don't show all possible trains if they are owned by other companies and so you might miss out on some superb deals by their competitors.

toy bus BUS vs. RAIL

Spend a little bit more time looking at what regional bus and train options there are, as well as private companies operating in that country. Low cost, long-distance buses are worth looking into – these companies have extensive networks and may operate on the route you are looking for at a fraction of the price of the national railways.

BEST DEAL written in block letters

 COUNTRY-SPECIFIC DEALS

Some countries offer seasonal discounts and amazing offers, such as travelling around Germany for 9 euros during summer. That’s right! This screaming deal was reserved for the summer months from 1 June – 31 August and allowed you to travel on public transportation nationwide. This includes buses, trains and all regional trains (2nd class). Let’s not forget about subways, commuter trains, and regional trains operated by private rail companies. It gets even better in Berlin and Hamburg where there are even ferry routes that are part of the public transport system - you could have also used them with the monthly 9-euro ticket. Let’s hope they bring this scheme back for 2024!

 colorful stopwatchesBOOK IN ADVANCE

This is a simple one: Book as soon as possible. A lot of the ticket prices increase closer to their departure.

SALE written as illustrationBE A BARGAIN HUNTER

Take time to window-shop and price compare from different travel providers. When you compare prices, you’ll discover some patterns like tickets tend to be cheaper on less popular travel days. Weekends are generally more expensive, so, if your mobility program schedule allows you to return on a Monday instead of Sunday, do it! It may make a world of difference in the price. Bonus: You may also avoid the masses returning from their weekend getaway.

TO RESERVE OR NOT TO RESERVE, THAT IS THE QUESTION

Believe it or not, sometimes planning ahead and reserving your seat can add a few extra euros to the cost of your ticket. This tends to be the case for low-budget airlines. Admittedly, this tip is a tricky one… not reserving a seat may make for a very long and uncomfortable journey because you may be assigned a place that is unpleasant. On the other hand, choosing your seat may give you peace of mind – and for many, you can’t put a price on that.

Hi friends!

Welcome to International Volunteer Day (IVD)

This year's International Volunteer Day theme is "If everyone did..."

Started by the United Nations in 1985, this is a day to pay tribute to volunteers worldwide and recognize volunteerism's value in peace and development.

Did you know that over a billion people volunteer worldwide to act for solidarity and humanity for people and planet?

According to United Nations Volunteers, "if everyone did" epitomizes the power of collective action.

"If everyone volunteered, the world would be a better place.  Imagine more than eight billion of us volunteering. Limitless possibilities for sustainable development – food and education for everyone, clean environment and good health, inclusive and peaceful societies, and more.

Volunteerism is an enormous renewable resource for social, economic and environmental problem-solving throughout the world. As the world faces mounting challenges, volunteers are often the first to help. Volunteers are at the fore in crises and emergencies, often in very testing and dire situations."

OLS & VOLUNTEERISM

In the OLS English community, we're no strangers to volunteerism, that's for sure! We've talked about the value and benefits of being a volunteer in our blogs and forums. If you haven't had a chance yet to read about it, see the list below:

Blog: How to Stretch a Dollar Series: Entertainment & Socializing on a Budget
Forum: UN Volunteers Young Talent Pipeline

Several of our delightful members have already shared their experiences as volunteers! Carlotta, Ekhlas, and several others told us about volunteering in Ireland, Turkey, and other places.

Perhaps you are a volunteer thanks to your mobility program! If so, we are curious to know about your experience as a volunteer. Where are you (or were you)? What are you doing? Or if you've completed your volunteerism, what did you do? We'd also love to know why volunteerism is important to you. Tell us everything in the Living Abroad forum discussion, "Where Are You Going On Mobility With Erasmus+ or ESC?"

FEELING INSPIRED?

Are you ready to share your talents as a volunteer? Check out the United Nations Volunteer page to find the right opportunity for you by clicking here.

Be sure to thank a volunteer today!
